UX Writer

I partnered with UX researchers, product designers, and engineers to create product language for VUI's and written interfaces. I created a personality for an intelligent home assistant and provided language feedback, recommendations, and strategic guidance on designing with language to establish consistency across product content.

Home Assistant Personality

My primary task was to create a personality for the Essential interactive home assistant. I began by formulating a spectrum based on five major personality traits. As a guide, I looked to both real and imaginary pop culture figures to zero in on the ideal personality our team wanted to create. (The circles indicate where on the spectrum we wanted each trait to be.)

Home Assistant Responses

As part of the process of narrowing down the personality traits, I created potential responses that the home assistant would give to user commands. The example below shows the types of responses across the spectrum of the humor personality trait.

Completing The Personality

The end product of creating the personality was to finalize the tone of voice for the home assistant and create both male and female personas as a reference point for how the home assistant would interact with the user. (‘Hato’ was the working name of the home assistant.)

UI Voice Guidelines

Once the personality was finalized, I created guidelines for voice user interaction that the home assistant would follow dependent on the command it was given.

UI Text Guidelines

Along with the audio responses, I also created specific guidelines for written text responses on the home assistant’s interactive screen.

Home Assistant Text Strings

I was responsible for creating, reviewing and revising all text strings on the Hato home assistant device. The following are several examples of those revisions. The Hato screen faces with the original text are on the left and my text revisions are on the right.
